The slow way.The only way we tan.
What vegetable tanning is
Vegetable tanning is the oldest way to turn hide into leather, a craft more than 5,000 years old. Instead of chrome and heavy metals, it uses tannins drawn from tree bark, leaves and fruit: oak, chestnut, mimosa, quebracho. The hides rest in these plant baths for weeks, sometimes months, absorbing colour and strength slowly, the way nature intended.
What we tan with
Four plants, four jobs. The blend decides colour, firmness and scent.
- OakQuercus
- Bark. Gives firmness and the warm base tone. The heart of German bark tanning.
- ChestnutCastanea
- Wood. Brings depth and a dense, firm body.
- MimosaAcacia
- Bark. Lightens the tone and keeps the fibre supple.
- QuebrachoSchinopsis
- Heartwood. Very rich in tannin, gives the leather fullness.
Why it takes time
Chrome leather can be tanned in a single day. Ours cannot. The hides move from one tannin bath to the next, each stronger than the last, over weeks of patient work. This is the cost of doing it naturally, and the reason the leather lasts a lifetime.
The same step in the process, two orders of magnitude apart. Everything that makes vegetable-tanned leather what it is happens inside that span.
Four marks that only come this way
None of them can be added afterwards. They are what the process leaves behind.
Natural shrink and grain
The grain shrinks and tightens on its own, drawn in by the tannins. Not pressed, not forced. Every hide is unique.
Soft to the touch
Without heavy surface coatings, the leather keeps its natural hand. Supple, warm, alive.
The scent of the forest
Plant-tanned leather carries a faint, unmistakable scent of bark and wood. The signature of an ancient craft, impossible to fake.
Colour for a lifetime
Tannins penetrate deep into the fibre, not just the surface. The colour holds, deepens, and develops a rich patina that tells the story of every year.
Safe and natural
Pure by name, pure by nature.
- No chromium (III) or chromium (VI)
- No harmful azo dyes
- No heavy metals
- Biodegradable
No chromium. No harmful azo dyes. No heavy metals. Vegetable-tanned leather is gentle on skin, safe for sensitive users, and fully biodegradable at the end of its long life. What comes from nature returns to it.
This is the only way PURLEDER makes leather. Slowly, naturally, and to last.
